For decades, Western powers have assumed Palestinians seek peace and a state of their own, blaming the absence of these goals solely on hardline Israeli positions against territorial concessions. However, in this post I will raise serious doubts whether Palestinians have historically or presently aspire for a state of any form. Polling has shown fluctuating yet limited backing for a “๐๐๐ผ-๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป,” but surveys rarely clarified if this meant peacefully coexisting with Israel in the long run, ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐บ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป. A recent Birzeit University poll found over ๐ณ๐ฌ% ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐๐๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ข๐ฐ๐ ๐ณ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐, these numbers even grow when the question is “Do you support Hamas?” These frightening numbers constitute a ๐บ๐ฎ๐ท๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฎ ๐ณ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ, meaning, the population and its leadership will seek Israel’s annihilation without recognition. Therefore an alternative perspective must be raised: ๐ 1. Do Palestinians genuinely seek two independent states or merely the defeat of Zionism? ๐ 2. How might their priorities and society credibly evolve away from goals presently rejecting Israel’s right to exist in any form? ๐3. If there was no Israel at all to begin with, would there have been a Palestine country with Palestinian people and nationality? If so, would it survive the Arab spring? …
