J. S. Bach Passacaglia in C minor | Leopold Stokowski, Et al…

/ 1969 / … During one of his annual trips to Europe,
Leopold Stokowski gave a televised performance of his own orchestration of Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor with the Saarbrucken Radio Symphony Orchestra. Incidentally, Stokowski was the only conductor to encourage “free-bowing” in the string sections. He felt that string players should not be regimented by playing up-bows and down-bows together but rather that they should achieve the music’s phrasing individually. This method also contributed to the famous “Stokowski Sound” as will be heard here.

J.S.Bach – PASSACAGLIA and FUGUE in C MINOR (BWV 582)

/ 2022 / … In this video you can hear my rendition of J.S.Bach”s “Passacaglia and fugue in C minor (BWV 582)” played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Rotterdam, created by Sonus Paradisi. A Passacaglia or a Ciaconne has been always been one of my favourite kind composition type. It’s mostly associated with a musical work of variations usually on a ground bass in moderately slow triple time. Luckily for me the very best of these Passacaglia is the one by J.S.Bach. Written in C minor it is a stern work but also rich and powerful. Robert Schumann described Bach’s Passacaglia as “intertwined so ingeniously that one can never cease to be amazed”. Bach ends this large work by making a double fugue with the main subject we already heard in the beginning and then a much more fast moving second subject.
